Converting waste water into biogas

Written by  Thanh Lê

(TBKTSG Online) – Two biogas plants – one kind of biology energy, by converting waste water from processing the starch cassava, had set up by Tay Ninh Biogas Company on 28 April.
These plants will handle 3000 M3 waste water to supply 10000 – 12000 cubic biogas per day. This waste water is from two starch cassava plants in Tay Ninh Town and Tan Bien District. The biogas can offset the fuel oil to process the starch cassava. Beside that, the odd biogas can generate electricity completely to support all the biogas plant’s activities.

Mr. Nguyen Nhut Hung, representative of Biogas Tay Ninh, the subsidiary of Asia Biogas (USA) – main investor, said that the converting waste water into clean energy will reduce 90% environmental pollution level in the starch cassava companies.

According to Mr. Vu Hung Viet, Deputy of the Tay Ninh People Committee, the environmental pollution by processing starch cassava have been the problem. In Tay Ninh province, there are 40.000 ha planting cassava and 119 processing starch cassava workshop and factories.
Tay Ninh is area that has the biggest industrial tapioca in Vietnam, can produce 300.000 starch tons. Every year, the factories have discarded 6 cubic million waste water and 90% of the factories construct waste water system without absorbent method. So, the underground water around the factories within a radius of 500m is polluted.

The Tay Ninh People Committee had forbidden and moved 40 factories in the population area because of environmental population. So, the converting waste water into enery project seems the sample model in area.

In 2008, Asia Biogas expected to continually invest 25 million USD in Vietnam to the other converting waste water into energy projects in the starch, ethanol, cattle-breeding fields.
